Altering our hair is one of the easiest and quickest ways to change our appearance. It also one of the first things we turn to when we are looking for a pick me up. We go into a salon or drug store to get the perfect treatment or product to turn our locks into the fabulous image we have in our minds and walk away horrified or devastated with the results.

We will briefly discuss a few of the most common hair problems and disasters that many of us are very familiar with:

Hair Disaster 1: Heat Damage is caused by blow drying, curling and straightening your hair on a daily basis. If you must use one of these tools on your hair to create your regular style when try to be a little more flexible and try putting your hair up a couple days a week. Wash your hair every second day instead of daily. Towel dry your hair to get as much of the excess moisture out of your hair as possible so that you don’t have to subject your hair to the heat of the blow dryer for an extended period of time. Moisturize; invest in a good daily moisturizer and also a deep moisture treatment that can be done on a weekly basis. Many of us go and get a hair cut when we are looking for a change or we just can’t take our hair any longer, if your hair is abused on a daily basis, regular hair cuts are a must to take care of split ends.

Hair disaster 2: A perm can be a lot of fun and look great when it is done properly, however when they go bad they can turn really bad. Perms do not always take, this is usually do to a processing error however do not rush out and get another one. Your hair has already been subjected to the solution so must see a professional hair stylist to determine the damage and whether or not a re-perm is possible. You need to take care because another perm disaster that can occur is over processing which can be so severe you can be left with a burnt scalp and hairs. If you are one of unfortunate individuals who has or is experienced this you probably already realize that not a lot can be done except deep conditioning or in some cases a hair cut to remove some of the damaged hair. Over processing is also responsible for the poodle look, if immediate washing and moisturizing fails to subdue the curls you can always go to a salon and get a relaxant put in your hair or a reverse perm. A reverse perm is when they simply re-perm your hair while keeping to combed straight.

Hair disaster 3: A good hairdresser can be as hard to find as a good doctor. Bad hair cuts are difficult situation because 99% of the time we fail to say anything while still at the salon, we don’t want to point out the fact that the stylist has just created a disaster on the tops of our heads or we do realize how bad it really is until we get home and start playing with it ourselves. We tend to believe they all know what they are doing but this is not the case, the fact is some hairdressers are just really talented and some are just really bad. You basically have two choices get a recut, where is up to you or live with it and do your best work with it or hide it.

Hair disaster 4: Home hair coloring has come a long way in the last few years. There are so many colors and shades to choose from, so it is often hard to decide which is the right one for you. The biggest problem is the color is not the one you had envisioned, we however can not always blame to product. Most people completely overlook the step in the instructions that states to strand test before you dump the color on your whole head. Recoloring is always on option, but remember that each treatment is damaging your hair. If you have really messed up you may have to seek the help of a professional.

Hair disasters can leave us in tears or embarrassed enough to hide under our caps for several weeks. Just remember that as bad as it gets your hair will eventually grow out and you will have a story to look back on laugh about with family and friends.
