Pregnancy Hair Care: Coloring Your Hair
March 9th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedHow pregnancy affects your hair can be quite miraculous or absolutely devastating and very often unpredictable. The same hormones that cause you to cry during a television commercial are also affecting your hair. The increased estrogen can affect your hair in many different ways, for instance some women are blessed with lush thick hair that seems to grow inches over night while others experience dry, brittle, limp locks. Some women even experience hair loss. Many women also realize to their horror that hair grows in areas that seem almost embarrassing including the face, abdomen and back. All these changes are due to the hormones racing through the body.
The properties of your hair can also undergo changes during pregnancy. If you have oily hair it may become dry, or if you had dry hair prior to pregnancy your may experience oily hair, curly hair may go flat or visa versa. The whole point is, if you become pregnant expect the unexpected and view it as part of the adventure.
Women who experience hair loss during pregnancy may be suffering from an iron deficiency, however it is quite common for many to be low in iron levels. Therefore it is recommended that you get two serving of iron rich foods, examples are lean meats, seafood, nuts, green vegetables (broccoli, spinach, and asparagus), iron fortified whole grains, beans and lentils, and dried fruits.
As pregnancy progresses many women begin to feel the need for a pick me up and look to their hair. Which leads to the number one question, is it safe to color your hair? A few years ago this was a very legitimate concern but due to consumer demands this has changed considerably in recent years. It is recommended that hair coloring be avoid during the first trimester (this is when all the development takes place). Although hair coloring is more widely accepted during the later trimesters caution should be taken. Many companies are now offering natural and organic alternatives that may be worth looking into.
If you are looking for creative ways to give your hair a color boost without putting chemicals on your scalp where they could be absorbed there are many new and fun products available. For instance get streaks or highlights, or use hair mascara or hair pencil. If you are feeling a little ambitious, there are many recipes for home made hair colorants available including:
1. For blonde hair, a lemon tonic
2. For brown or brunette, rinse hair with a strong black tea, or black coffee hair
3. For red hair, use a strong tea of rosehips or cloves,
4. To enhance your red hair, try a mixture of beet and carrot juice
It should be noted that your hair may not react or take color the same way as it did pre-pregnancy. Always check with your doctor, not every situation or person is the same and only you and your physician know what is right for you. Remember your hair is part of your skin system so a health balanced diet rich in all the essential nutrients is always the best pick me up for your hair.
