Growing Beautiful Healthy Long Hair
July 16th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedMany of us (men and women) have gone through different phases in our lives where we have dreamt of having beauty long flowing tresses. Most will agree it can be a long and frustrating process. For many individuals by the time they have reached their goal lengths their hair just is not healthy and looks nothing like we had envisioned.
First of all we must face reality and realize that hair only grows so fast and there is not a lot we can do about it. Generally hair grows approximately a half an inch per month or six inches per year (this is an average). We can however assist our hair follicles as they attempt to produce healthy hair at the genetically programmed rate by avoiding known hair growth inhibitors. These known hair growth stallers or inhibitors include a poor diet, excess caffeine, alcohol, smoking (specifically nicotine), drug use and generally any habit that causes a deficiency of necessary vitamins and nutrients that our hair follicles need for peak performance. Other external factors that can slow hair growth are stress, your age, health issues, lack of sleep and certain medications. obviously some things can be changed while others can not.
Secondly, when many individuals make the decision to grow their hair out they avoid getting it cut. Why get your hair cut if you are trying to let it grow? This premise is self defeating in two ways. The end goal is to have beauty healthy hair and for this to occur we must get regular trims in order to keep or ends in tip top shape.
In addition, we all know all the dreaded and inevitable stage where we can not seem to do anything with our hair, it is to short and to long at the same time. Remember this important fact, you do not have to go around like a shaggy canine for six months when attempting to grow out your locks. There are many different hair styles available to get your through every stage of the game. The goal is not to look bad now so that you can look great later, look great all the way through the process. It is absolutely imperative that you work with a good hair dresser who knows your goal.
Healthy hair is the key to great looking long hair. The main culprit of unhealthy looking hair both long and short is damage and not surprisingly we ourselves are to blame. Hair is to a great extent delicate and needs to be treated gently and with care. The problem is we often do not see the damage we are inflicting until it is to late. Hair is damaged to a large degree by the same means regardless of length.
With that being said there is however one area that does require a few adjustments to be made and that is when you are washing your long hair. How many of you get up in the morning and walk straight into the shower or pull your hair out of a pony tail and jump in with out combing your hair and then wonder why it is full of so many difficult tangles even after you have used a load of conditioner. Make a point of combing out your hair before getting into the shower to wash it this makes it much easier to deal with once you get out again.
Another difference you will notice with your hair as it grows out is that the ends of your hair are dryer then the hair closer to the scalp. For this reason concentrate on adding extra moisture to the ends of your hair. It may be necessary to use a deep leave in moisturizer on your hair after you have washed and conditioned the rest of your hair. Another option is to use to separate products, one for the base or roots and another for the ends. Experiment and find out which works better for your hair.
